What’s the DIFFERENCE?
Well, this is quite debatable. Obviously, a catalogue is a multi-page document that is usually a list of things for sale. Also, a rack card is usually a tall 2-sided informative card, often found in a display on a wall or counters where people could ‘take one’ if they wanted to.
Other than that, these terms are sometimes interchangeable. It’s more important to ask about the end use to determine the design, format and price:
Full Colour vs. Black & White
Does your message require a full-colour impact? Or is a black-only printing also suitable for your distribution? Black-only printing is more economical but can maybe have less design impact than full-colour printing. Although, sometimes a one-colour design on a specialty paper stock can really get you noticed...
Size
Does your document need to be small enough of fit into a package or be mailed? Maybe you need the extra size to display your great vivid photos or detailed maps and diagrams.
We can print different sizes but it’s always easier and economical to design to the Standard sizes. There is also less paper waste!
Folding
Did you just want flat sheets printed or does your design include some folding to keep it compact or make it into a booklet?
Type of Paper
Did you want the cheapest paper that we can print on or did you want to push the envelope with a high quality specialty stock that says, ‘this is a high-value printed product’?
We have many different types of paper to choose from. Uncoated (like copy paper) to coated stocks (like glossy magazines), and also may specialty stocks like recycled and metallics. From light paper to heavy card and many options in between.
Quantity
While there is no minimum amount, we always say that you should print the amount that you think that you will use. The unit price will drop with more printed at one time, but those print savings are wasted if your brochures just sit on a shelf or end up being recycled.
Ask for a price for more than one quantity if you aren’t exactly sure how many you want.
Maybe your project is starting to feel like a small book...

Supplying Artwork
Flyer & brochure artwork can be made using various apps. When supplying finished print-ready files, a pdf file is often preferred, regardless how it was produced.
Objects in the artwork, like type or logos, will print crisper from a pdf. Although a design can be created in a photo editing app, such as Photoshop, it’s not good practice. The letters will be rendered at the image quality resolution, which in most cases, isn’t high enough. This would result in either mildly blurry type and a possibility to see the pixels (that are the tiny squares that make up the image).
If you are supplying artwork, the finished pdf artwork will probably require 3mm bleed. This will add 3mm to each edge and will increase the total size by 6mm in height and width.
Files should be supplied as pdfs with a reasonable quality. Pixel artwork can be pdf, jpg, or psd. Again, if you are having trouble deciding, just get in touch with us. It’s our job to help you get things printed!
